This saved us $5 million in revenue…

Let’s play a game… 🎲

Imagine yourself as a key player in a multi-million dollar company, and you’re in charge of managing client relationships. One day, your VP of Sales, (let's call him James), comes to you with a challenging scenario:

The company has decided to discontinue a product—One that's critical for one of your major clients.

James’ idea?

To tell the client a white lie–That the product is on a 6-month backorder.

His reasoning?

This would supposedly save face and prevent losing the client's other business.

Now... What would YOU do in this situation?

Option #1

Go with James’ idea as he's your VP. Tell the client the product is on backorder, avoiding immediate conflict and keeping the business afloat in the short term. This option seems less confrontational and more in line with your VP.

Or…

Option #2

Reject the idea of misleading the client. Stand firm on your moral grounds, even if it means risking conflict with James and potentially losing a portion of the client's business (and your job) because you defied your VP. Choose transparency and honesty, trusting that it will lead to a better outcome in the long term.

If you chose Option #2—valuing honesty and integrity over a convenient lie—Then you and I are on the same page.

Because this scenario isn’t just a hypothetical situation. It was a real-life dilemma I faced a little over 20 years ago in my career. When James (not his real name) suggested we mislead our client, I was at a crossroads.

I mean, sure… The easy path was to comply, but my conscience (and insights from a mentor I shared this with) pointed me to do the right thing.

From that point forward, my relationship with James was contentious at best, but in the long run, it was for the better.

Because in less than a year, James was let go, and the choice I made played a pivotal role in saving the company over $5 MILLION… plus the margin from James' decision would’ve cost the company BIG TIME.

How did I know?

I decided to fight for what was right. I brought the situation to the company's CFO, Gary (that’s his real name) and I laid out the two scenarios.

Then, I asked him to work on projections on what could’ve happened if we went with either option and bring them to the company's executive team.

They all agreed with my decision and hopefully appreciated that I was willing to fight for what was right for the company.

This experience taught me a very valuable lesson:

Integrity isn't just about doing the right thing; it's about building a foundation of trust and respect with your clients that can grow (and maybe even save) your business in the long term.

And now that I think about it, this reminds me of the story of Daniel in the Lion's Den from the Book of Daniel in the Tanach (Daniel 6:5-29).

1715608208325?e=1722470400&v=beta&t=OJKzJHHjcBSd7YBDxGAUgEDPYFQ-Q_4E88DVMO4N3P4

Daniel, the wisest of King Darius’ counsel, was one of three chosen to be a supervisory by Darius.  Darius was considering appointing Daniel over the entire kingdom.

Daniel's colleagues, envious of his position with Darius, devised a scheme to accuse him of treason. They suggested to the king that, for 30 days, no one in the kingdom should pray to any G-d or person except the king.

The penalty for violating this decree was death in a lions' den. The king, believing this would strengthen his rule, agreed and officially enacted the decree.

As the others figured, Daniel would not comply as he was committed to his faith. As always, Daniel continued to pray to G-d every day with his windows wide open facing Jerusalem, knowing full well the consequences.

Then, when King Darius found out about this, he had no choice but to send him to the lion’s den.

What happened next is nothing short of a miracle…

The next morning, King Darius went to check on Daniel in the lion’s den. And to his surprise? He was completely untouched, because an angel of G-d shut the lion’s mouths to protect Daniel (since he did the right thing by continuing to pray).

Now, let's bring this back to the world of business…

Like Daniel, we are often faced with challenging situations where the easier path might be to bend our principles for immediate gain or to avoid conflict.

However, the story of Daniel teaches us three vital lessons that, when implemented, can help scale your business faster, easier, and smarter. 👇

  1. Stand Firm in Your Beliefs

Like Daniel, if you believe in something strongly, stand by it, even if it goes against the grain. This could be your business ethics, your commitment to quality, or your approach to customer service.

  1. Lead by Example

In business, as in the story of Daniel, your actions set an example for others. By choosing integrity, you not only do what's right, but you also inspire your team and peers to uphold similar values.

  1. Short-term Loss for Long-term Gain

Sometimes, upholding your integrity might seem like a risk, but it often leads to greater respect and trust in the long run. Clients and colleagues who know they can trust you are more likely to remain loyal and supportive.

So, the next time someone challenges us and our decisions, we can ask ourselves, “What would Daniel do?”

At the end of the day, for our sanctity, it is important to…

NEVER bend what we believe in, no matter how tempting the circumstance may be.

To your success,

David

Be the reason someone smiles today

This morning we went on a bike ride that was at 1900 foot elevation with Richard Branson. He told us your minds going to want to quit but your body can keep going.

About halfway up there was a sign that said be the reason someone smiles today. So let’s take that reminder with us as we go about our day today!

Be careful what you wish for... Don’t let this happen to you 👇

Have you ever made a business decision that seemed like a REALLY good idea at the time…Only to see it completely backfire?

There is actually a name for this: The Cobra Effect. This effect is a result of an unintended consequence of a decision made without fully understanding or considering the impact on those affected.

Back in colonial India, the government was concerned about the number of venomous cobras in Delhi, so they introduced a bounty for every dead cobra people turned in.

1715003452391?e=1722470400&v=beta&t=tPggv0MFKJdbEm8kIkThrGHNVxorBFyreO8rfoRDRPo

Sounds like a pretty solid plan… right?

WRONG.

At first, the plan worked beautifully. But then? Locals came up with a clever idea. They thought:

“Hmm… If the government is paying me to turn in dead cobras… Why don’t I just breed hundreds of them—or even THOUSANDS—and make lots of money? 🤔

…And so they did.

The government quickly became aware of this and scrapped the bounty, which made breeders release their now-worthless snakes. The cobra population, ironically, skyrocketed.

Another example (this time more recent) happened in the United States back in 2011.

In an attempt to increase the circulation of dollar coins, the U.S. government made them available online for purchase with no shipping fee.

1715003452340?e=1722470400&v=beta&t=EuzUq7E3srijxrWMqayqxlfzxgLZ7FqZwsbGELioPrQ

What happened next?

Instead of actually using these coins, people bought them with their credit cards, racked up credit card points, and then simply deposited the coins back into the bank.

The goal of increasing circulation completely backfired because the government FAILED to fully understand or consider the impact on their offer.

Now, one of my favorite examples of the Cobra Effect is when King Rehoboam succeeded his father King Solomon. Rehoboam faced a plea from his people to lighten the heavy burdens imposed by his father (high labor and taxation).

Ignoring their request, he threatened to instead INCREASE their burden.

This poorly considered decision led to the kingdom splitting in two, with ten of the twelve tribes of Israel revolting.

So at the end of the day, Rehoboam’s failure to understand or consider the impact of his decision on his people and how they could possibly react resulted in a weakened and divided kingdom.

Now let’s talk business…

In business, the Cobra Effect can manifest in many ways. For instance, setting aggressive sales targets might seem like a logical step to boost revenue.

But without considering the broader impact, this can lead to selling to unqualified people or a compromise in product quality as teams scramble to hit numbers at any cost.

Or, take the introduction of new technology in an attempt to streamline processes. Without proper training and change management, this move can lead to decreased productivity and low morale as employees struggle to adapt.

The key takeaway? Every decision has a ripple effect.

As leaders and Entrepreneurs, it's critical to anticipate these ripples and understand how they might morph into waves that could either propel our business forward or, conversely, flood the engine room.

To avoid the latter, here are 3 ways you can avoid falling prey to the Cobra Effect as an Entrepreneur. 👇

  1. Start Thinking Holistically

When planning any new strategy, think beyond the immediate benefits. Look at the broader picture. How will this decision affect every aspect of your business, from your employees to your customers?

  1. Seek Diverse Perspectives

It’s easy to get tunnel vision when you’re too close to a project. This is where diverse perspectives come in handy. Consult with your team, gather feedback from different departments, and even consider customer opinions if necessary.

Because sometimes, the insight you need to avoid an unintended consequence comes from the most unexpected sources. Remember, the more angles you cover, the less likely you are to be blindsided.

  1. Prepare for Flexibility and Adaptation

If there's one thing the Cobra Effect teaches us, it's that not everything goes according to plan. Build flexibility into your strategies.

If you see a decision leading down an unintended path, be prepared to adapt and pivot quickly. This agility can save you from exacerbating a problem into a full-blown crisis.

So, I encourage you to ask yourself these three pivotal questions before making your next big decision:

  • Beyond the immediate benefits, how will this decision affect every facet of your operation? Think about your team, your customers, your resources, and even your brand reputation. Will this decision bring sustainable growth or a temporary spike?

  • Have you stepped back to get a 360-degree view of your plan? Are you open to feedback from your team, stakeholders, and even customers where relevant? Sometimes, a fresh pair of eyes can spot potential pitfalls you might have missed.

  • How prepared are you to shift gears if things don’t go as planned? Being agile and flexible is not just about having a Plan B; it’s about recognizing when to pivot and having the courage to make those tough calls.

To your success,

David

Rule of 7 for Successful Marketing: Do this and it will be HARD to fail…

How many times have you found yourself singing along to the infamous "800-588-2300 EMPIRE!" jingle whenever it comes on TV?

1714402013675?e=1722470400&v=beta&t=Ri5Y35nVohcLyLleKmeJ1JE67w2gDsYwT_o50ORFg3o

…Or what about the classic 1-877-KARS-4-KIDS commercial that gets stuck in your head for hours? (My son used to get mad every time I sang this one :D)

1714402012914?e=1722470400&v=beta&t=Is7v5Jz4LB9ALWJ-kWMXYH687rrn5FMwdbNMbqassts

Truth is, companies like these don’t just “randomly” come up with super catchy jingles that get ingrained in your brain.

Their marketing teams scripted them with a purpose, implementing a strategy called ‘The Rule of Seven’, which states that a potential customer needs to see or hear your marketing message at least seven times before they make a purchase decision.

Think about it…

The first time you heard the 🎶 "Liberty Liberty Liberty… Liberty" 🎶 commercial by Liberty Mutual, you probably thought nothing of it.

The second time? Maybe it caught a bit of your attention.

However, by the third time, you found yourself inadvertently humming along. And after the seventh exposure? You're not just singing along; you know exactly what they’re selling (in this case insurance), and their brand is now living in your head rent-free.

Now, this rule isn't a new invention of the modern marketing world; it's deeply rooted in human psychology and behavior.

The more we're exposed to a message, the more familiar and comfortable we become with it, eventually leading to trust and action.

In fact, the number seven holds significant meaning not only in marketing but also in the ancient wisdom contained in the Tanach (Hebrew Bible). In biblical terms, seven often symbolizes completeness or perfection, such as in the seven days of creation.

In the Book of Genesis, G-d states that he created the world in six days, each day bringing forth different elements - Light, sky, land, seas, plants, animals…and finally humans. On the seventh day, G-d rests, marking the completion of creation.

Just as each day in the creation story adds a layer to the unfolding world, each part of your company’s marketing message should build upon the last, creating a lasting impression and impact in the mind of your audience.

The problem?

Many Entrepreneurs feel discouraged when they blast out an email or other marketing message once or twice and see no immediate results.

They invest time, effort, and resources into crafting a PERFECT message… Only to be met with crickets.

They start questioning everything: Is my product not good enough? Am I targeting the wrong audience? Why aren't people responding? 😰

This frustration is even WORSE in today's fast-paced world, where instant gratification is the norm.

But here's the hard truth: In marketing, you’ll rarely experience instant success. It's a marathon, not a sprint, and marketing requires patience, persistence, continuous testing, and a deep understanding of human behavior.

This is why we have:

  • Relationship builder series
  • Retargeting campaigns
  • Follow-up sequences
  • Content calendars
  • …Etc.

In Jewish tradition, during weddings, we recite Sheva Brachot—Seven Blessings. These blessings reflect hope, joy, and gratitude, each adding to the collective celebration and symbolizing the building of a new life together.

Similarly, in your marketing, each message should be a blessing to your audience, offering value, solutions to their problems, or even a moment of joy.

And just like these blessings, your messages will accumulate over time, building trust and rapport with your prospects.

So, when you find yourself frustrated by the lack of immediate response to your marketing efforts, remember the Rule of Seven.

Think back to the seven days of creation in the Bible.

If G-d, in His infinite wisdom, allocated seven days to accomplish something as monumental as the creation of planet Earth, it's a clear indication that some things simply cannot be rushed.

Successful marketing campaigns require time, planning, and a steady, consistent approach to truly come to fruition.

Behind the Headrest: The Hidden Risks of Seat Back Failure in Auto Collisions

When it comes to vehicle safety, most people think about airbags, seat belts, and crumple zones. However, one crucial component that often goes unnoticed is the seat back. The seat back plays a vital role in protecting passengers during auto accidents by preventing whiplash injuries and providing structural support. In this blog post, we will delve into the importance of seat backs in vehicle safety, common causes of seat back failure, real-life consequences of such failures, how to identify potential seat back issues, and ways to prevent seat back failures to ensure passenger safety.

Seat backs are not just there for comfort; they are designed to keep you safe in the event of a collision. A sturdy and properly functioning seat back can help distribute crash forces more evenly throughout the body, reducing the risk of serious injuries. Without a strong seat back, passengers are at a higher risk of being thrown forward or backward upon impact, increasing the likelihood of head, neck, and spinal injuries.

Unfortunately, seat back failure can occur due to various reasons. One common cause is poor design or manufacturing defects that compromise the structural integrity of the seat back. Inadequate materials or faulty assembly can lead to sudden collapses or reclining mechanisms giving way during a crash. Additionally, wear and tear over time can weaken the seat back's frame, making it more susceptible to failure under impact.

The real-life consequences of seat back failure can be devastating. Victims may suffer severe head trauma, spinal cord injuries, or even fatalities due to ejection from the vehicle. These outcomes highlight the critical role that properly functioning seat backs play in protecting occupants during collisions.

To identify potential seat back issues before they escalate into dangerous failures, passengers should regularly inspect their seats for any signs of damage or instability. Check for loose bolts or screws, unusual noises when adjusting the seat position, or visible cracks in the frame. If any abnormalities are detected, seek professional inspection and repairs immediately to avoid putting yourself at risk on the road.

Preventing seat back failures is paramount in ensuring passenger safety while driving. Regular maintenance checks by qualified technicians can help detect and address any underlying issues with your seats before they compromise your protection in an accident. Furthermore, avoiding excessive force when adjusting your seat position and refraining from overloading your vehicle with heavy items can help prolong the lifespan of your seat backs.

In conclusion, don't underestimate the importance of your seat backs when it comes to staying safe on the road. By understanding the risks associated with seat back failure, knowing how to spot potential issues early on, and taking proactive steps to prevent failures from occurring, you can help safeguard yourself and your passengers from harm during auto collisions. Remember: behind every headrest lies a crucial element in your overall safety while driving.

When to Call in the Experts: Signs Your Commercial HVAC System Needs Repair

In the bustling world of commercial spaces, where productivity and comfort go hand in hand, the importance of a reliable HVAC system cannot...
