Holy Land #3: Jonah’s WHY and How It Relates To Your Business

I thought I’d kick this edition off by sharing a story from my last trip to Israel.

I visited one of the oldest cities in the world. The walled city of Jaffa.

Among the many historical significances of this city, Jaffa is where Jonah was first given his commandments by G-D to go to Nineveh.

If you don’t know the story, after G-D told Jonah to go to Nineveh, Jonah was torn between his loyalty to G-D and his emotional impulses. He ended up giving in to his impulses and chose to flee from G-D’s presence and instruction by boarding a ship traveling in the opposite direction (to Tarshish).

In turn, G-D planned a perfect storm, to intercept the prophet. The storm was beyond intense, frightening all the sailors aboard the ship. Jonah confessed that he believed it was his presence on the ship that was causing the horrendous storm…

At his own request, he asked his shipmates to throw him overboard to silence the storm.

G-D then appointed a great whale to swallow Jonah in the deep sea, and it was only after Jonah repented and embraced his purpose (his WHY), that God instructed the great whale to deliver him back safely to Jaffa (where he then journeyed on to fulfill his purpose).

Jonah received the calling, and instead of embracing it, and leaning into it, he ran away from it, and gave into his fleeting emotions.

I’ve certainly had thoughts about stepping away from what my purpose is… We all do at times.

But I remind myself of the power that comes from leaning into WHY it is I started my business.

I recall my origin story and it grounds me.  The sense of belonging and purpose ignites me and refocuses me.

This feeling is contagious and it spreads like wildfire through my company and my team whenever I share it.

You see, when I do what I do well (and when we as a company do what we do well), our clients see just how well we do it.

Our clients will want to see us do it again and again.

And if we do it really well, our clients will bring others for us to serve.

While it’s good to think outside the box (and continually innovate and look for new ways to do what you do even better), always remember to take a step back and lean in to what you set out to do.

What your mission is.

Ask yourself, “Is this aligned with my WHY or CORE PURPOSE?”

To your success,

David
