Coldplay s'est formé en 1996 dans la capitale britannique, à l'UCL, où le chanteur principal a rencontré le guitariste. Ils ont ensuite été rejoints par Guy Berryman et le batteur, complétant le groupe. Au début nommé Starfish, le groupe a changé son nom pour devenir Coldplay deux ans plus tard. Leur premier EP, intitulé Safety, est sorti en 1998, leur permettant d'attirer l'attention dans le monde de la musique. Leur album inaugural, intitulé Parachutes, sorti en 2000, a rencontré un succès international, notamment avec le titre "Yellow", devenu un hit mondial.
