🔑 3 Key Strategies to Capitalize on New Trends

Last newsletter, I revealed the first of four strategies Entrepreneurs can implement to stay ahead of the competition by spotting and capitalizing on new trends in the marketplace.

In case you missed it, the first strategy was to always listen to customer feedback.

Listening to customer feedback helps business owners identify shifts in consumer preferences and emerging trends, allowing them to adapt their product offerings and maximize revenue potential.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg…

Strategy #2: Stay Informed on Industry News

Have you ever seen someone go live on YouTube or Facebook and thought to yourself, “Whoa… this person is really good in front of a camera!”

Well, the truth is, there’s a pretty good chance that “live video” is actually pre-recorded.

Many of us (yes, me included) use software like LivePigeon or StreamYard to go live on social media with a pre-recorded video, in order to record the video at a convenient time or avoid mishaps such as the risk of technical difficulties (like wifi interruption).

The founder of Live Pigeon, Brandan Fisher, is a friend of mine and he is a PRIME example of how to get ahead of the competition by staying informed on industry news.

You see, Brandan’s company was mainly powered by Facebook’s API…This became a problem when Mark Zuckerberg testified in front of Congress a few years ago.

As a result of Zuckerberg’s testimony, Facebook decided to change the rules and restrictions of the live-streaming section of its API, and that caused Brandan’s software to temporarily be ineffective.

However, because he stayed informed on industry news, Brandan was able to quickly bounce back by modifying his Facebook integration, and at the same time, adding YouTube streaming as part of their service.

Fast forward to today, and Live Pigeon is still up and running and continues to rapidly expand as a company!

Strategy #3: Embrace New Technologies

Embracing new technologies can be a KEY way for Entrepreneurs to stay ahead of the competition.

For example, I’m sure you’ve at least heard about AI (artificial intelligence) by now, right?

If you haven’t, think of it as a super-powered computer brain that is able to think, learn, and adapt in ways that are similar to humans.

Imagine a machine that can analyze vast amounts of data and make decisions, recognize patterns, and even communicate with people, all without needing to take a break… Now, imagine what this machine could do for your business!

For example, think about the last time you were shopping online and wanted to ask someone a question about a certain product before buying.

Naturally, your first instinct would be to call the company’s phone number and ask a customer service representative… right?

NOT ANYMORE.

These days, endless hold times and automated phone menus are a thing of the past. Business owners are starting to take advantage of digital AI-powered live chatbots that allow customers to simply type their question into the chatbot and receive a prompt and personalized response.

Not only is this more convenient for the customer (as they get the answer to their question immediately), but it’s also more efficient for the company, as the chatbot can quickly gather information and escalate issues to a human.

Here’s another example…

Years ago, I met a guy at an event who sold promotional products (pens, cupholders, mouse pads, etc.).

He was grossing $2M per quarter. It was just him and his wife. I asked him how he did it, and he showed me a completely intricate web of marketing automation he had set up on the backend.

If someone clicked this, they got this email. If they clicked that instead, they got a different email.

Bottom line is, automation done right saves you money, AND more important–It saves you and your team time…Valuable time that could be better spent building relationships with those you should be in front of.

As you know, an Entrepreneur’s biggest challenge AND biggest asset is TIME. If you can maximize time, you can maximize business returns.

Last but not least is the fourth and final strategy…

Strategy #4: Look Beyond Your Own Industry

As Entrepreneurs, it's important not to get too tunnel-visioned and only focus on your own industry.

Therefore, another GREAT way to stay ahead of the competition is by considering how trends and developments in other industries may impact your business, and be open to adapting and innovating in response.

For example, let’s pretend you own a small graphic design studio.

As a small graphic design studio, you are always looking for ways to stand out from the competition and offer your clients the most innovative and cutting-edge solutions…

That's why you have your eye on the entertainment industry, where you know that immersive, interactive experiences are all the rage.

So, you start to research ways that you can incorporate virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) into your design services, knowing that this will give your clients a truly unique and memorable experience.

You then invest in the necessary equipment and software and begin to offer VR and AR design services to your clients.

Maybe you even take on the first few clients at the “founders rate” and let them know this is a new service you are offering, therefore they will receive a deep discount for being one of the first clients to try it.

In exchange for the founders rate, they agree to give you an honest testimonial with the results.

And before you know it, word spreads about your cutting-edge design solutions, and more and more clients start to seek you out for their projects.

Voila! Your small graphic design studio is now known as the go-to place for immersive and interactive design solutions, and you have successfully stayed ahead of the competition by looking beyond your own industry and adapting to new trends and developments.

So, those are four key strategies you can use to spot and capitalize on new trends in the marketplace.

I encourage you to look for ways to incorporate these strategies as you continue to scale your business and stay ahead of the competition.

To your success,

David

🎥 The Rise & Fall of This Industry Giant

Let's take a walk down memory lane.

I want you to think back to the 90s and early 2000s... Remember what we used to do if we wanted to watch a movie at home?

Back in the day, we would’ve had to walk into a video store (like Blockbuster) and rent a DVD or VHS.

I can vividly picture my 25-year-old self browsing through the aisles, trying to find something that looked interesting, and then carefully scanning the back cover to make sure it was something I wanted to watch.

Once I found something that really piqued my interest, I would take it to the counter, whip out my membership card, pay a small fee, and drive home to watch the movie.

And if you REALLY want to feel old-school, sometimes I might’ve even had to rewind the VHS before I could start watching!

RedBox came shortly thereafter… A unique vending machine service for DVD rentals.

Ah, the good old days…

But then everything changed when streaming services like Netflix started to become wildly popular during the early 2010s.

Now, instead of having to physically rent a DVD or cassette, all we have to do is open up the Netflix app to instantly gain access to THOUSANDS of movies and TV shows… Right at our fingertips!

Crazy how much technology has evolved in just the past few years, isn’t it?

That’s why as an Entrepreneur, it’s important to always be on the lookout for new trends in the marketplace in order to maximize your company’s true earning potential.

Because by catching trends early and being agile, you can better position yourself to capitalize on new opportunities and likely gain a unique competitive advantage over your rivals.

Let’s circle back to the Blockbuster and Netflix example…

The primary reason why Blockbuster ended up failing is that they were unable to adapt to changing market conditions and consumer preferences (basically convenience).

Instead of embracing the growing digital trend that was occurring in the entertainment industry by offering a similar service to Netflix, Blockbuster decided to continue to focus on its traditional business model — movie rentals.

Funny enough, they actually changed their minds and tried to compete YEARS later… but it was too late. In fact, the founder of Netflix offered to partner with Blockbuster before they launched, and Blockbuster laughed at the prospect of their success.

This proved to be a HUGE mistake for them as the company was unable to compete with the convenience and affordability of streaming services,  which ultimately led to their bankruptcy in September 2010.

Another example of a company that became incredibly successful by capitalizing on new and innovative trends is Tesla.

Founded in 2003 by a group of environmentally friendly engineers, Tesla was one of the first companies to ever focus on electric cars and has since become a leader in the development of EV technology.

Back then, Elon Musk noticed a worldwide trend where consumers were gradually becoming more and more eco-friendly as solar panels gained popularity.

But at the time, nobody had figured out a way to effectively introduce the renewable energy trend to the automobile industry… yet.

Thus, he decided to purchase Tesla in February 2004 via a $6.5 million investment and eventually became the CEO in 2008.

At first many people thought Elon was losing his mind when he bought the business. I mean, there’s no way an electric car company could ever succeed… Right?

Heck, even Musk himself once said that starting an electric car company was “idiocy squared” since nobody had ever done it before. (There have been attempts, but none were very successful at that point).

Regardless of the high probability of failure, Musk knew that if he didn’t change the world with electric cars, somebody else would… so he had to at least try.

Fast forward to today, and Tesla is the #1 largest automaker in the world by market capitalization (which reached over $1 TRILLION in 2021!)

Not only that, but now almost every major car brand has followed their footsteps by introducing an electric vehicle to their fleet, including Toyota, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and even Lamborghini.

The key takeaway here is that unless you want to end up like Blockbuster, it’s absolutely CRUCIAL that you learn how to spot and capitalize on new trends in the marketplace.

And from my decades of being a business owner, I’ve learned four HIGHLY effective strategies that allow me to stay ahead of the game by doing exactly that.

Here they are…

Strategy #1: Listen to Customer Feedback

Listening to customer feedback can help you stay ahead of the competition by providing early warning signs of emerging trends and a shift in consumer preference.

For example, imagine that you are the owner of a small bakery that specializes in gourmet cupcakes, (let’s call it Fairytale Cupcakes). You regularly receive feedback from your customers through social media, email, and in-person interactions.

Through this feedback, you notice that a TON of your customers are starting to look for healthier dessert options due to the growing popularity of gluten-free and vegan diets.

This leads to a handful of regulars (that used to shop at your bakery 3x a week) start to only show up once a month now.

What would you do in this situation?

Would you sit on your hands and do nothing?

Or instead, would you expand your product line to include a new selection of gluten-free and vegan cupcakes to satisfy the new demand of your customers?

If your first instinct was the latter, congratulations! You’re one step closer to nailing these four key principles of how to maximize revenue potential by spotting trends early.

Stay tuned for next week’s newsletter where I’ll share the next three key principles—and trust me—you’re not going to want to miss it!

To your success,

David

🚀 Soar Through Invisible Ceilings!

When was the last time you hit a plateau in your business or personal life?

Maybe you SMASHED your sales quota last year and now topping it seems impossible since the bar is set so high…

Or maybe you’ve lost 10 pounds at the gym but can’t manage to burn any more fat no matter how hard you try…

The truth is we’ve all experienced some sort of plateau in our lives at some point; and although they can be super frustrating to go through, did you know that plateaus are actually a GOOD thing?

Reason being is that the only way you can experience a true growth plateau is after you’ve made a significant amount of progress in whatever goal you’re trying to accomplish.

In other words, before you can experience an acceleration, you have to first go through consolidation.

NOTHING continues to go up in a straight line forever.

Take the stock market for example. When you look at a chart on a daily time frame, you can find many volatile up-and-down swings.

1684155472542?e=1709769600&v=beta&t=KLfHlI5CQaJPGQOfOhmjCYaemaa-rAallfHvALnqrDE

But as time goes on, those swings start to consolidate/plateau and get smaller and smaller… until eventually you see a MAJOR blastoff.

1684155492305?e=1709769600&v=beta&t=BG55ouAub6BxB21RtE99uFg4LyRFsw-z2_tLD9Rb4Os

Now, the challenge begins when people zoom out and ONLY look at a long-term timeframe, where all they see is a 45-degree angle pointing up and to the right (indicating growth).

Most of us see this explosive and “perfect-looking” growth on the surface level, but tend to completely forget about all of the volatility and consolidation that occurred prior.

The same analogy can be used for business. This can lead Entrepreneurs to believe that the plateau they’re currently experiencing isn’t normal, but in actuality, it 100% IS!

So the question then becomes… How do we break through this invisible ceiling and continue supercharging our growth after hitting a plateau?

One word: MOMENTUM!

Just how a racecar uses momentum to quickly accelerate and pass other cars on the track, Entrepreneurs use momentum to create new and exciting opportunities which can ultimately help them jump, skip, and leap over their competitors.

I’ve implemented this strategy COUNTLESS times here at Business Nitrogen over the past 12+ years.

When you look at the history of our company, we’ve had a lot of these ups, then a consolidation or plateau, and ultimately another leg up that came as a direct result of using momentum to rejuvenate growth.

In fact, we’ve actually been in a consolidation phase over the past several months.

Why?

Well, looking back on it, I feel I wasn’t very clear on where I wanted to take the company moving forward. So recently I got together with our leadership team and strategists, talked it out, made a plan… And guess what?

In less than three weeks, we created a plan that could easily TRIPLE the size of our company over the next 12 months!

That just goes to show how much influence momentum can really have on breaking through growth plateaus.

Another great example of a company that has used momentum to create opportunities after hitting a plateau is Facebook (now known as Meta).

If you didn’t already know, the vast majority of their revenue comes from digital advertising on Facebook and Instagram — over 97% to be exact.

The problem is, their core business model is starting to severely falter due to the Apple Tracking Transparency update that came out in 2021.

Essentially, this update made it so much harder to track user activity outside of their platform…Which  resulted in Facebook ads becoming a lot less effective than they used to be.

(This is because companies now have fewer data points to properly target their ads, which can lead to lower rates of return on their marketing campaigns).

To combat this issue, Facebook started pouring BILLIONS of dollars into the development of the Metaverse — a project they believe will someday transform their old S-curve into a new one.

Now let’s think about this for a moment.

If this actually does work well for Facebook and we all end up living in a “Ready Player One” type of world in 2030, imagine all of the crazy opportunities they’ll have to exponentially grow their core business model…

For example, it’s possible that companies that choose to advertise on Facebook’s Metaverse will gain access to more insights and statistics on ad performance than ever before!

New VR headsets now feature cameras that are able to track your eyes and face, which can be absolutely BRILLIANT for advertisers in the future.

Why?

Because advertisers could gain the ability to see the facial reactions people make when viewing their ads (e.g. smile, laugh, furrowed brows, etc).

Not only that, but they might also be able to track people’s eyes to determine what part of their ad gets viewed the most, where people tend to lose interest in reading, etc.

Who knows…Maybe “Metaverse Marketing” will become the next big thing in the digital advertising space and Facebook ads will be a distant memory of the past–similar to how some view print ads today.

So... the next time you find yourself in a situation where growth seems to have stagnated and further progress seems impossible…

Just remember that at the end of every S-curve there’s always a new one waiting to be created.

To your success,

David
