💰How to Sell a $20 Product for $500+

In the next few minutes, I’ll show you how ANYONE can sell a $20 product for over $500+ using this “not-so-secret” branding tactic that many Entrepreneurs don’t even know about…

Imagine walking into a high-end boutique, named 'Palessi' filled with luxurious décor, champagne flowing, and shoes that scream designer chic. 👇

1710770545599?e=1716422400&v=beta&t=EasgdEVJkiv8gu8lSuSNsmWwUJyeh0Tn7SlSChwhaZw

Now imagine discovering those very same shoes are actually from Payless—(yes, PAYLESS)—the budget-friendly shoe store. 👇

1710770545600?e=1716422400&v=beta&t=EjXCJgxHNvRe0l1q8_hjliEgwCEV5q72N1L32XRZmvM

Sounds like an elaborate prank, right?

Well, that's exactly what Payless did in a brilliant marketing stunt, shedding light on the incredible power of brand positioning.

This eye-opening experiment wasn’t just a prank, it was a compelling showcase of how brand positioning can dramatically alter perception and consequently, the value of a product.

Payless took their regular stock of shoes, (typically sold between $20-$40), and placed them in a luxury store setting under a faux designer label.

The result?

Fashion influencers lined up to pay $500+ for a $20 pair of shoes!

So, what changed?

…It wasn’t the product.

…It wasn’t the materials.

…It was the PERCEIVED VALUE.

After all, the age-old saying, “perception is reality,” holds especially true in marketing. The perceived value of your product can significantly outweigh its actual cost or functionality.

Now, this doesn’t mean you should be deceptive. Rather, it means boosting your product's value through the power of brand positioning…And this often ties into storytelling.

Every brand tells a story. Whether you realize it or not, your product or service is embedded in a narrative that influences consumer behavior.

So, what story are you telling?

Is it one of luxury, accessibility, innovation, or reliability?

Let's look at another business that mastered the art of storytelling and brand positioning: Starbucks.

Before Starbucks, a cup of coffee was just a cup of coffee, something you made at home for ten cents or less or grabbed from a diner for a dollar or two.

Starbucks, however, didn’t just sell coffee; they sold an experience—A "third place" between home and work where people could relax, meet, or work while enjoying their artisanal brew.

They positioned themselves as a luxury coffee brand, focusing on the perceived quality of the beans, the expertise and attitude of their baristas, and the ambiance of their stores.

They introduced terms like “Grande” and “Venti,” adding an exotic Italian flair to every customer’s coffee order (simple, yes…But HIGHLY effective!)

The result?

People were willing to pay significantly more for a Starbucks coffee than they would for a regular cup.

(I’ll admit…I’m sometimes guilty of this as well. 🙋♂️)

So at the end of the day, Starbucks isn’t really successful because of their coffee.

They’re successful because of the story and experience they’ve created AROUND their coffee, turning a simple commodity into a premium experience.

So now the question is…How can YOU apply this to your business?

Here are 5 ways you can take your product or service and create a narrative that not only captivates, but also increases its value in the eyes of your customers. 👇

  1. Craft a Compelling Brand Story: Like Starbucks, create a narrative that goes beyond the product itself. Share the origin story of your product, the craftsmanship behind it, or how it fits into the aspirational lifestyle of your customers.

  1. Elevate the Experience: Focus on every aspect of the customer experience, from the first touchpoint to the final delivery. This could be through packaging, an engaging website or marketing funnel, exceptional customer service, or a unique shopping experience.

  1. Engage Emotionally: One of the most effective strategies in branding is to create an emotional connection with your customers. When customers feel an emotional tie to a brand, they're more likely to perceive it as valuable.

  1. Focus on Quality: High perceived value is often a result of the belief in superior quality… so pay attention to the details! Ensure that every aspect of your product, no matter how big or small, reflects the high standards of your brand.

  1. Leverage Social Proof: Just like Payless used fashion influencers to increase the perceived value of their shoes, use testimonials, influencer endorsements, and user-generated content to build credibility and interest around your brand.

So, as you continue to strategize this year, think about how you can apply these strategies to transform your business. Ask yourself:

“What can I do in 2024 to turn my product or service into not just a purchase, but an experience powered by a story that my customers are eager to tell?”

To your success,

Keeping Commitments

Have you ever promised someone you'd do something (or be somewhere), but then a 'better' opportunity comes along shortly thereafter?

Maybe you promised to help a friend move on Saturday, but then you get an offer for courtside tickets to a big game.

…Or maybe you promised your child that you'd coach their youth sports team, but then you get a call from a major investor who wants to meet at the same time to negotiate a big deal.

To me, it’s a test of integrity, a moment where our principles are on the line. Do we flake on our commitments for the temptation of potential gain? Or do we stand firm, honoring our word?

Not long ago, I faced a similar challenge.

As a board member of EO Atlanta, I was set to attend our annual Board Strategy Summit. But then, out of the blue, I got an invite to speak at a HubSpot conference with hundreds of potential clients.

An incredible opportunity, right?

Naturally, my team’s reaction was: "Wow! That’s huge! You HAVE to speak!”

I could see the excitement in their eyes…HUNDREDS of ideal clients gathered in one place hearing our message?

But here's the thing—Commitment means something to me. I believe in the power of being a man of my word.

I had given my word to EO Atlanta that I would be there and contribute, as the previous year I was not able to attend due to a prior commitment.

And if there's one thing I've learned throughout my career, it's that the integrity of your word is the foundation of your character and your business.

So what did I do?

I stayed true to my promise.

I went to the summit, not only to fulfill my obligation but to fully engage without the nagging thought of 'What If'.

At the summit, we discussed the topic of thinking big, and it reminded me of a recent book I read, "10X is Easier than 2X" by Dr. Ben Hardy. 👇

1710253831500?e=1716422400&v=beta&t=_dxfHexksPlim5bx9ScW-w_r4MG1NJWcRotLYDF9fFM

I offered to give every board member a free copy as a personal gift, so I personally purchased 25 books (one for each board member). It was my way of contributing, of planting a seed without expecting anything in return.

And here's where things take an interesting turn…

After handing out the books the next day and speaking at the summit, something unexpected happened. Connections were made, conversations sparked, and people reached out to me to connect further.

I had lunches, meetings, and meaningful interactions with several other members who were there.

Somehow, (without intending to), I had created a ripple effect. By simply honoring a commitment, providing value, and sharing something I believed in, I laid the groundwork for future opportunities and collaborations.

Isn't it crazy how the universe works?

We often want to chase after the big fish (Hubspot in this scenario), often forgetting that it's the small, consistent acts that build the ocean we fish in.

And in the weeks that followed, I noticed a shift. Those seeds I had planted started to sprout. People reached out for advice, partnerships, and referrals, seeing the genuine value I could add.

It's a testament to a principle I’ve held since childhood: The power of commitment.

Keeping your word, (even when you don’t think there’s much in it for you or if better alternatives present themselves), builds a reputation of reliability and trustworthiness—Qualities that are priceless in business and life.

Over the years, I've often been asked, "Why do you do so much when there's no immediate payoff?" And my answer is simple: I'm planting seeds.

I genuinely believe that much of the success I enjoy today is the harvest from the seeds I've sown throughout my life.

So, in theory, was it a better business move for me to attend the HubSpot conference?

On paper…Sure, yeah, maybe.

But at the same time… I would have sacrificed my integrity for an “illusion” of something better.

So, what's the moral of this story?

First, plant a lot of seeds. Be generous with your knowledge, your resources, and your time.

And second, honor your commitments. If you say you're going to do something, do it—Even if something seemingly better comes along.

To your success,

Never Say The “B-Word”!

Isn't it strange how 'busy' has become the go-to response when many are asked how they’re doing?

…As if our self-worth is measured by the length of our to-do lists?

But let's be straight: saying “I’m busy” doesn’t mean we’re actually achieving anything meaningful. And as Entrepreneurs, we should aim for productivity, not just a packed schedule.

Full transparency: I’m no stranger to this either. I've caught myself in the 'busy' trap too. Yet, it dawned on me during a recent conversation with my team that 'busy' often just means 'overwhelmed with work that may not even matter.'

In other words, it's not about how much we're doing, but how much we're accomplishing.

So, why is 'busy' a problem?

For starters, it's vague.

It tells nothing of what we're busy with or whether it contributes to our goals. It's like running on a treadmill; lots of effort, no destination. And in this fast-paced world, being 'busy' can be an easy excuse to avoid the important—(albeit difficult)—tasks that will drive the business forward.

Being productive, on the other hand, is different. It's about being efficient and effective. It's about prioritizing work that aligns with our vision–More importantly, saying NO to what doesn't.

Productivity means setting goals, breaking them down into actionable steps, and then executing with precision. It's about creating value, NOT just filling time.

Take a moment and think about the last time you were 'busy'...How much of that time was spent on work that ACTUALLY matters?

How often were you sidetracked by interruptions (like the constant buzz of notifications, the allure of social media, or the quick “you got a minute?” chats that turn into hour-long conversations?)

You know what I’m talking about.

One minute you're in the zone, crushing it, and the next, you're pulled away by a Facebook notification.

And let's be honest. Once you're on Facebook, a quick scroll turns into, "Hey, might as well see what's trending on X... Oh, and I should check my email while I'm at it!"

So, what's the solution? How do we go from falsely busy to genuinely productive?

Here are five simple (and super easy!) strategies that have worked wonders for me and my team. 👇

  1. Set Clear Goals: Define what success looks like for you. Break down your goals into small, manageable tasks, and focus on one at a time.

  1. Prioritize Ruthlessly: Not all tasks are created equal. Identify the activities that have the most significant impact and allocate your time accordingly.

  1. Set Boundaries: Set specific times for checking emails and social media. Outside of these times, keep your notifications off. You'll be amazed at how much more you can accomplish without constant interruptions.

  1. Delegate and Automate: You don't have to do everything yourself. Delegate tasks that others can handle and automate repetitive tasks with technology (Remember—AI may be an untapped resource!)

  1. Learn to Say NO: Every 'yes' to something unimportant is a 'no' to something important. Let me say that again…Every “YES!” to something unimportant is a “NO!” to something that’s actually important…So be selective with your commitments.

We all have the same 24 hours in a day, but what sets us apart from our competitors is how we use them. You shouldn’t fill every minute with activity, but rather cherry-pick the right activities that push us towards our goals.

This is something successful Entrepreneurs like Elon Musk, Benjamin Franklin, and Patrick Bet David understand deeply.

These successful figures don't just work hard; they work smart. They practice Time Blocking: A method where they plan their day into segments dedicated to specific tasks. 👇

…So forget multitasking; give your full attention to one task at a time, and THAT will increase your quality of work and, ultimately, the output.

Think about it…When Elon Musk splits his day into five-minute slots or when Bill Gates dedicates chunks of his time to deep thinking, they’re maximizing their productivity.

They’re ensuring that not a minute is wasted on the non-essentials. That’s the power of time blocking. It's a way to guard your time, which is your most precious resource.

So, how do you apply this to your life?

Start by identifying the tasks that drive the most value for you and your business. Block time for these tasks and protect that time as if your success depends on it—Because it does.

During these blocks, turn off all distractions and give the task at hand your full, undivided attention.

Remember, your competitors are working 24/7 to kick your a$$. The difference between winning and losing could be how you choose to use the time you have.

So as we approach the New Year, let’s remember that being 'busy' is easy.

Being productive takes courage—The courage to say no, the courage to focus, and the courage to move deliberately toward our goals.

To your success,

David

Here's My #1 Thing You Should Never Say

Allow me to share my #1 piece of advice for entrepreneurs to never say (and really, anyone): Banish the phrase, “I’m busy.” Why? Because busy doesn’t always translate to productivity. Believe me, I’ve fallen into this trap too. Just filling our time isn’t the same as getting things done. Recently, I had a heart-to-heart with my team about this, and it hit home. The key is to focus on productivity. The more productive you become, the more you can produce, resulting in more clients, and ultimately, more revenue.

Just tweaking that one word can help shift your whole mindset.

Send this to someone who would benefit from this shift!
