The Importance of a GREAT Hook

There’s no way around it. We are bombarded by advertising and marketing messages everyday.

In fact, I read somewhere that the average person sees between 4,000 and 10,000 ads in a single day!

With that much data coming at us, our brains are literally programmed to quickly identify advertisements, and then automatically tune them out.

And you guessed it… This just makes it harder and harder for us as marketers to grab the attention of our target avatar.

In my experience, one of the first things to look at in your advertising is one of the most overlooked variables within the ad itself.

“The Hook”

For most people, the first thing they think of when they hear “hook” is taglines, attention grabbing phrases, teases, or a “taste” to leave someone wanting more.

They can be used at the forefront of ads, sales letters, emails, articles, videos, funnels, social media posts… pretty much any marketing channel you can think of.

But we often forget that marketing hooks can be used as angles too.

Not too long ago I visited Caesarea, a town in Israel known for its historic port created by King Herod and named after Augustus Caesar. Caesarea’s port was a deepwater port that served as a connecting point to Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Now, it was important for King Herod to be able to attract people to his port in order to collect taxes, fees, and ultimately drive revenue.

But because there were a plethora of other ports others could choose from, he knew he had to do something to entice customers to choose Caesarea.

So, what did he do?

He created a HOOK.

The hook in this case was an actual theater—a place where people could come and be entertained by a show. Here's my and my family in Caesarea .

Not only did King Herod build a theater, but he also built a race track and many more entertainment venues that differentiated his port from all others!

So although he wasn’t a great leader, (the Jews were not a fan of King Herod), he was a master marketer and knew how to draw people into the city through the hook of entertainment.

In a world where we are oftentimes exposed to  over 10,000 ads per day, Entrepreneurs must know how to effectively take advantage of the art of hooks in order to maximize the number of eyeballs that not only see but pay attention to their products and services.

A great example is IKEA and their strategically thought-out food court.

Because of their massive size, you can only find an IKEA in city outskirts where the nearest restaurant is often many miles away.

Hence, IKEA’s founder Ingvar Kamprad thought of the bright idea to include a full-sized food court for customers so they wouldn’t have to leave the store when they got hungry.

Not only was the food convenient, but it was also SUPER CHEAP! A full meal at IKEA costs only $3.99, and their hotdogs will set you back a mere 50 cents.

Let’s face it… with prices like these, it’s safe to say that making money on food isn’t their goal. In fact, they even lose money on some food sales.

Instead, IKEA food courts are meant to serve two main purposes:

  1. Increase overall foot traffic to their stores
  2. Maximize time customers spend in-store, leading to high-ticket purchases

So although they may lose some money by selling someone a hotdog for $0.50, does that really matter if they end up selling that person a $1,000 sofa in the process?

Exactly.

Here’s another great example of an effective hook I stumbled upon not too long ago…

1681742289358?e=1708560000&v=beta&t=XI-jgmTjM809ToW-K_95o_Mhhr-kbEVEIk5U8UiJGBw

It’s an ad for Gold’s Gym that reads:

IT’S TIME TO FLATTEN THE CURVE.

This ad was launched during the height of the Coronavirus outbreak where the phrase “flatten the curve” meant to stop the spread of the virus, while the other meaning of the phrase is to lose weight.

Where the hook really shines though is within the double meaning of its image, which sort of acts as an illusion depending on how you look at it.

At first glance, you may see a significantly overweight man with a large stomach, but if you look closely you’ll notice that his stomach also represents the curvature of the Coronavirus chart.

This hook resonated with many at the time because plenty of people were gaining weight due to a sudden lack of exercise.

Everyone was spending the majority of their time sitting at home, and nobody wanted to go to the gym because either:

A) Their gym was shut down

Or…

B) They were afraid of catching the virus

So, as you go about your week I encourage you to be mindful of all the marketing hooks you are exposed to everyday… pay close attention and spot those that really cause you to stop and pay attention or take an action.

As you start to become familiar with what they look like, how they are strategically placed, and all the different shapes and forms they come in, you can then translate that knowledge into your own business to gain further attention from your prospective clients and customers.

Because remember: Human attention is the #1 global currency in modern-day society.

Your business could offer the best product known to mankind, but if nobody knows that it exists… You won’t make any sales.

To your success,

David

80/20 of Your Success or Failure… Reacting to Setbacks

Think back to the last time you encountered a major setback, either in your personal life or as an Entrepreneur in your business.

How did you react to that challenge?

During my last trip to Israel, I visited a city called Tiberias, (a beautiful city on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee which is also home to the Tomb of Rabbi Akiva).

Akiva is known for being one of the most famous rabbis, but he did not actually become Jewish until he was 40 years old.

In fact, the reason why he decided to become religious after his conversion is that the woman he wanted to marry agreed to marry him ONLY if he stepped into his promise, as she knew he could become a man of greatness.

He agreed, so she sent him away to Yeshiva. He was away for 24 long years. (For those of you who don’t know, Yeshiva is a traditional Jewish school that teaches Rabbinic literature).

When Rabbi Akiva returned home, he brought with him 24,000 students. Needless to say, his wife was proud!

However, things took a turn for the worse when he was faced with a MAJOR setback immediately after returning home with his students…

A deadly plague quickly spread killing all but a handful of his students. In a blink of an eye, he lost EVERYTHING.

Rabbi Akiva now had a tough decision to make…

Do I take the easy way out and give up?

Or do I keep pushing forward?

As an Entrepreneur, odds are that you’ve likely asked yourself those same questions on multiple occasions throughout your journey.

The truth is, being an Entrepreneur isn’t all sunshine and rainbows (it’s a far stretch from what people see on social media)… Most of us aren't flying private jets and popping expensive bottles of champagne all the time.

Instead, it’s sometimes spending $2,000 on Facebook ads only to make back $327, then figuring it out.

It’s wondering how you’re going to meet payroll at the end of the month.

It’s a lot of stressful nights where your hands are crossed behind your head as you pace back and forth in your office wondering…

“Is this really worth it?”

I had asked myself that very question over 13 years ago when shortly after I resigned as Chief Executive Officer of CL!X. Because back then, I, (just like Akiva), nearly lost EVERYTHING.

My house… My cars… My family… Everything.

I decided I no longer wanted to work for someone else. I wanted to be the master of my own fate. And to be honest, things were going okay at first because I had a sizable nest egg to fall back on.

But as 1 month turned into 6 months, and as 6 months turned into 18 months, I began to realize that I was in trouble—revenue just wasn’t there.

Before I knew it, I went from living a life most could only dream of to being hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt.

Things got so bad that I had to go to my young daughter and ask for her babysitting money just so we could pay our mortgage.

At that point in my life, there were really only two paths I could’ve taken:

  1. Give up and take a job

2. Figure it out and keep pushing forward

Luckily, like Akiva, I decided to persevere and stick it out… and it’s a good thing I did or else Business Nitrogen would have never existed.

We would’ve never helped as many Entrepreneurs as we did in growing and scaling their businesses, and actualizing their visions.

As for Rabbi Akiva, he made the decision to start over after losing almost all 24,000 of his students.

He picked himself up and began teaching again, with one of his main teachings being to love your fellow man as you would love yourself.

So, whenever you’re facing utter uncertainty, doubt, or even defeat, always remember that life is 20% what happens to you and 80% how you react to it.

If you’re going through struggles right now, (let’s face it… we all are) I want this message to serve as a little nudge to keep pushing forward.

Because in the grand scheme of things, most of the problems we’re worried about today won’t matter whatsoever a year from now.

What will matter are the people who are by your side helping you grow each step of the way.

For example, when Rabbi Akiva came back from Yeshiva after 24 years, his wife was pushed aside by one of his students that yelled:

“MOVE!!! The Rabbi is coming in!”

Then the Rabbi said to his student:

“You know that lady you just pushed aside? It’s because SHE believed in me that I became who I am today.”

Similarly, I, along with your friends and family, are all in your corner rooting for you to succeed and prosper in life and in business… and I can’t wait to see the day when you finally “make it”.

I’ll end with a quote by a well-known Greek Stoic Philosopher:

“It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.”

— Epictetus

To your success,

David

Our Purpose In Life

Have you discovered your purpose in life?

During my last trip to Israel, I took a minute to step back and ask myself that very question.

King David’s purpose was to claim the Kingdom of Israel by founding the Judaean Dynasty and uniting all the tribes of Israel under a single monarch.

His purpose was discovered once it was realized that he possessed a powerful trait that King Saul lacked: a love and heart for G-d (which is why he ultimately became the new King of Israel).

So as I laid on the rocks of Nachal Aragout, with the blazing hot sun beating down on my face as I stared into the horizon… I think I finally figured out the answer.

My purpose in life is to make a significant impact on humanity through incubating, nurturing and scaling Entrepreneurial-based companies and supporting the Entrepreneurs that run them.

And if you remember, last week we talked about your moral compass and how we as Entrepreneurs must always refrain from putting it up for sale.

That ties into this week’s topic because similar to your moral compass, Entrepreneurs should never lose sight of their purpose in life… Especially when things aren’t going as well (or as you originally planned) and you’re thinking about throwing in the towel.

If you can’t immediately recognize your life’s purpose, here are three follow-up questions I recommend asking yourself to make the discovery process easier:

  1. What are you most passionate about?

Oftentimes, our purpose in life can be directly correlated to our passions and what we love doing most every day.

Take any famous basketball player for example…

Everyone that steps foot into the NBA has one thing in common: At one time they loved to play the game of basketball both on and off the court.

People like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant didn’t become the best in their industry by dreading the sound of their 5 o'clock alarm…Rather, they had difficulty falling asleep the night prior because they couldn’t wait to get up in the morning and go to practice.

Many Entrepreneurs I talk to feel the exact same way about their businesses—including myself.

I can’t wait to hop out of bed every morning, meet with my team, and work together to help our clients grow and scale their businesses, reach their revenue and profit goals, and attain their ultimate visions.

If that sounds like you, your life purpose may be to positively impact as many people as possible through the growth of your business.

This leads me to my next question…

2. What Did Your 8-Year-Old Self Love Doing?

Ah, yes… the good ol’ days of being a kid—back when life was simple, and not as complicated and demanding as it is now as an adult.

Think back to those early days of your life and try to remember what you loved to do when you had unlimited free time and ZERO responsibilities.

(I take that back… I remember being responsible for bringing 100 M&M’s on the 100th day of school in 3rd grade!)

Personally, what my 8-year-old self loved most was going to Florida on every vacation so I could go to work and “help” my grandfather grow his business.

Now that I think about it, at that age I don't know how much I was helping, but my grandfather told me I was…

At least I was good at matching up all the Medicare and Medicaid forms and putting them in numerical order so they could be filed for payment.

I still smile thinking about all the memories made in my grandfather's Entrepreneurial business; he taught me all about hard work.

Although I’ve ‘somewhat’ grown up since, I still value that core principle my 8-year-old self lived by and continue to practice it to this day.

Take for example my trip to Israel…

I had the opportunity to spend LOTS of quality time with friends, and my family (my wife, my son, and my daughter). The memories we made together will never be forgotten.

And while we didn’t work hard, we played hard.

From early mornings to late nights, we pushed ourselves to see all that we could while putting in a hike nearly every day.

And now that I think about it…

Entrepreneurship has positively influenced my ability to embark on such spontaneous adventures, which is partially why I (and probably you) decided to become an Entrepreneur in the first place…

FREEDOM! 🌎

Now, the final question you should ask yourself when discovering your life purpose is…

3. What are you naturally good at?

I believe everyone has a gift from G-d that they’ve naturally developed as a child and carried on into adulthood.

Some are naturally talented at playing the violin…while others excel in having strong interpersonal skills.

The action of starting a business around your gift from G-d seems to be a recurring theme among many Entrepreneurs.

For example, my team tells me that my gift from G-d is being an extraordinary leader. I will own this, but I personally feel my natural gift is ideating and solving challenges on the spot… which I think is one of the reasons why I decided to start Business Nitrogen over 12 years ago, to help solve our client’s challenges so they can scale.

This quote from world-renowned television host Steve Harvey backs up that claim perfectly:

“I'm going to take this G-d-given gift of being funny, and I'm going to spread it out like peanut butter on everything I do.” — Steve Harvey

So, I want you to take a moment and ask yourself those three questions as you continue to discover your purpose in life.

Here they are again (so you don’t have to scroll back up):

  1. What are you most passionate about?

2. What did your 8-year-old self love doing?

3. What are you naturally good at?

I encourage you to use your answers as a token of remembrance to help kickstart your week!

To your success,

David
