Perfection vs. Progress: Which Pill Will You Swallow?

Have you ever had  the most amazing idea for a marketing campaign, sales strategy, or even a new product or service, but never launched it because you wanted it to be 100% perfect?

Maybe you spent months — (or even years!) — tweaking, polishing, and refining every little detail, but never felt satisfied or confident enough to put it out into the world.

Or maybe you got so overwhelmed by all the things you had to do, learn, and master before you could launch, that you ended up procrastinating or simply giving up altogether.

If this sounds familiar, I know the feeling. In fact, many Entrepreneurs struggle with perfectionism, and it can be a HUGE obstacle to achieving your goals and successfully scaling your business.

But here’s the thing… Perfection is an illusion.

It doesn’t exist. And believe it or not, chasing perfection can actually hurt you more than help you.

Why?

Because perfect is the enemy of done.

Let me explain what I mean by that…

When you aim for perfection, you set yourself up for failure by:

❌ Creating completely unrealistic and unattainable standards that are impossible to meet

❌ Focusing on the flaws and mistakes instead of the progress and results

❌ Wasting time and energy on things that don’t matter or make a difference

❌ Delaying (or downright avoiding) taking action because you fear criticism, rejection, or failure

In other words, you sabotage your own success.

But on the other hand, when you forgo perfection and aim for DONE, you set yourself up for success by:

✅ Creating realistic and achievable goals that are within your reach

✅ Focusing on the value and impact instead of the perfection and polish

✅ Using time and energy on things that matter and make a difference

✅ Taking MASSIVE action by launching your idea because you know that feedback, improvement, and learning is part of the process

How do I know this to be true? It all started in the early days of Business Nitrogen…

When I first set out to create Business Nitrogen, I had a grand vision of helping Entrepreneurs grow their businesses faster and easier using proven systems and strategies.

And as a speaker, trainer, and coach for Tony Robbins and Chet Holmes, I had all the right ingredients for a recipe of success.

But at the time, I was facing a BIG problem…

The fear of failure had me spinning my wheels, pouring too much energy into perfecting my website, logo, and content, and not enough into actually launching.

It wasn't until a fateful meeting with two Executive Vice Presidents from Business Breakthroughs International, (Tony Robbins and Chet Holmes' company), that I had an epiphany.

One of them, Stephanie Vaughn, said:

"Dave, perfect is the enemy of done — just launch the darn thing!"

And boy, let me tell you…Those six words sparked a fire within me and reminded me that sometimes you just have to take the leap of faith and trust the process.

So I launched, and it was like spreading fertilizer on a budding plant. Business Nitrogen flourished, and soon enough, I was making a positive impact in the lives of my clients.

I was living my purpose and serving others, and it all started with that one simple piece of advice.

So, how exactly do you stop chasing perfection and start taking action?

Here are four quick and easy tips that have helped me overcome this challenge throughout my career:

1. Start with the MVP (Minimum Viable Product)

Think of your MVP as a prototype that is designed to serve as a proof of concept, not to be a final product.

This is the SIMPLEST version of your idea that can deliver value to your customers and put your assumptions to the test.

By launching your MVP, you can get valuable feedback from your customers and the market, and this can help you refine your product or service in a more targeted and effective way.

2. Set a Firm Deadline and Stick to it

A deadline is like a commitment to yourself, and it can help you stay accountable and focused.

It’s absolutely CRUCIAL to set a realistic deadline, and then prioritize and focus on the most important tasks that will help you achieve that goal.

Remember: it's better to launch something good than to delay launching something that's perfect, and never forget that your deadline is a fixed point… So don't let perfectionism be an excuse for not launching your idea.

3. Embrace Feedback and Improvement

Once you launch your idea, you can get real hardcore data and feedback from your clients and the overall market.

The more feedback you get, the more you will learn about what works and what doesn’t, and how you can improve your idea to create more value.

Sometimes feedback can be tough to hear, but it's a necessary part of the process and it can help you become more successful in the long run.

4. Rinse and Repeat

Launching your idea is just the beginning of your journey…The real magic happens when you continue to iterate, improve and evolve your product or service.

By constantly testing and refining your idea, you can create a cycle of continuous growth and improvement which can help you stay ahead of the competition.

Remember, excellence is not about being perfect, but about constantly improving and delivering value to your customers.

So, the next time you have a brilliant idea for a new strategy, product, service, or business, don’t let perfectionism get in the way of you launching it.

Remember that perfect is the enemy of done, and launched is ALWAYS better than perfect.

And trust me, you’ll be amazed by the results you can achieve by taking massive action instead of always chasing perfection.

To your success,

David
